The old and new Yoga:
Yoga, a Sanskrit word generally meaning "discipline" refers to a method of gaining that release from the bondage of karma and rebirth which constitutes the highest aim for most Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. This method of disciplined physical exercise and meditation is actually one of the eight stages of yoga process, through which the yogi seeks spiritual liberation and release from the material world. (Grolier Encyclopedia of Knowledge, 1991)
Today, yoga has evolved to engage more people. It is now used as a method of concentration and a form of exercise (an effective method, I should say). It is not anymore solely practiced by the Hindus, Buddhists or Jains but many people from across the globe and from different religious background have practiced yoga. It used to be a religious practice but now many people enjoy yoga for the experience of serenity it brings. Aside from that, yoga empowers an individual's strength thereby making it a good form of exercise and workout.
Advantages of Yoga:
In yoga, it requires discipline and concentration in order to comply with the most difficult postures. It trains the body to be controlled by the mind. The body may signal the mind that it cannot be done but with yoga, you are disciplined to control your body and impulses. Consequently making you feel at ease with the most difficult postures and positions. The secret is proper breathing and silence. The serenity should be inside and out which definitely helps in the process.
In this form of exercise, Yoga in weight reduction can definitely be effective. For every posture, it is like you are doing weight lifting. Instead of a foreign object like dumbbells, you are using your body as weights and the same body as well to carry it. This builds enormous strength to your muscle groups. At the end of every yoga session, it is but normal for persons to be soaked in sweat. Despite being in this condition, you will notice that most individuals don't look like they are tired. In fact, they feel like they are so refreshed like waking up in the morning. The yoga experience hits two birds with one stone. It doesn't just silence the inner being in you but it also makes you feel good about yourself due to the weight that you have managed to lose. It therefore brings a positive sense of being in you and helps you to keep a positive outlook in life. Therefore, yoga for weight reduction is indeed true.
